U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the situation in Afghanistan:

"The rapid collapse of the Afghan government and security forces to the Taliban has created a desperate situation in Afghanistan. I'm encouraged to see the Biden administration working swiftly to support the evacuation effort of American diplomats, aid workers, and Afghans who risked their lives to support the United States. And I will monitor closely the situation as it evolves for all of those who call Afghanistan home.

"Our presence in Afghanistan represents the longest war in American history. While I welcomed the announcement of our withdrawal earlier this year, I am grateful for the contributions of all who have served in Afghanistan over these past two decades. My thoughts are with the Americans, NATO allies, and Afghans who served side-by-side with bravery, and with the families and friends of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Because of these combined efforts and sacrifices, Osama bin Laden was brought to justice and the Al Qaeda network responsible for the attacks of 9/11 has been severely degraded. Over the coming days and weeks, it will be critical to ensure we do all we can to keep our promise to those who made these accomplishments possible."
